From Orphan Girl to Independent Mother: The Journey That Changed My Life

My Life Story-Part-24

Orphan to independent mother journey is not just a story, but a path of resilience, strength, and transformation that shaped my entire life.

The Beginning of a Life Without Security

Every life story begins somewhere, but not every beginning is comfortable or secure. Some lives start with uncertainty, struggle, and a constant search for belonging.

My story began as an orphan.

From a very young age, life taught me lessons that most children never have to learn. While other children were surrounded by parents, siblings, and the warmth of a family home, my childhood unfolded within the walls of an orphanage.

At the age of four, I entered an orphanage that would become my world for many years.

The orphanage provided shelter, education, and basic care. For that, I will always remain grateful. Without that support, my life could have taken a much darker path.

But growing up in an orphanage also means learning independence much earlier than most children. There is no one person who belongs only to you. No mother waiting for you after school. No father to guide you through difficult moments.

Instead, you learn to become emotionally strong at a young age.

You learn to survive.

Education: The First Window of Hope

During my childhood in the orphanage, education became my greatest source of hope.

For many children growing up without family support, education is more than just learning subjects from textbooks. It becomes the only path toward independence and dignity.

Fortunately, I was given an opportunity that changed the direction of my life.

Through a sponsorship program from compassionate individuals in Sweden, I was able to continue my education. Their support made it possible for me to study and build a foundation for my future.

Even though they were thousands of kilometers away, their kindness created a bridge between two worlds — one where I was struggling and another where someone believed in my potential.

Because of that opportunity, I was able to complete my studies until the tenth grade while staying in the orphanage hostel.

For a young girl who had very little security in life, education became the first light guiding my path forward.

When Life Changes Direction Unexpectedly

After completing my tenth-grade education, I hoped to continue studying further.

Like many students, I dreamed of pursuing science and continuing my academic journey through higher secondary education. But life does not always move according to our plans.

Despite my efforts, I was unable to secure admission into a science group for higher secondary studies.

At that moment, it felt as though my dreams were closing their doors.

However, life sometimes redirects us in unexpected ways. When one path closes, another quietly opens.

Instead of continuing with higher secondary education, I was encouraged to join a nursing assistant training program — the ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) course — at Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women in Coimbatore.

At that time, I did not fully understand how significant that decision would become.

But that single step would eventually lead me toward a profession that would transform my life.

Discovering Purpose Through Nursing

The nursing course lasted one year, but the lessons it provided extended far beyond clinical knowledge.

Nursing is not simply a profession; it is a commitment to caring for others during their most vulnerable moments.

During my training, I learned how to assist patients, support medical teams, and provide compassionate care to individuals facing illness and pain.

For someone who had grown up without family support, this profession felt deeply meaningful.

Helping others allowed me to give something back to the world that had once helped me survive.

After completing the course, I began searching for employment.

Within two months, I received an opportunity that felt almost unbelievable.

I was offered a job at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital in Coimbatore, one of the respected medical institutions in the region.

This was my first major opportunity in life.

I knew immediately that I could not afford to lose it.

A Short Moment of Peace

When I received my job offer, I made an important decision.

My mother had been living in Tiruppur, and I wanted her to be close to me. I believed that after years of struggle, we could finally begin building a peaceful life together.

So I brought her to Coimbatore.

We rented a small house opposite the hospital where I worked. For the first time in many years, I felt that life might finally become stable.

Those days were simple but meaningful.

After long hospital shifts, I would return home and see my mother waiting there. It was a quiet happiness — something that many people take for granted but meant everything to me.

Unfortunately, that peace did not last long.

The Sudden Loss That Changed Everything

Only forty-five days after moving to Coimbatore, tragedy struck unexpectedly.

My mother suffered a sudden heart attack and passed away.

The loss was devastating.

In a single moment, the only person who connected me to a sense of family was gone.

When my mother died, I found myself standing alone in the middle of life with no protection, no guidance, and no emotional support.

There were no relatives nearby who could help me.

No one to advise me about what to do next.

It was one of the loneliest moments of my life.

But even in that moment of grief, life did not stop.

I still had my job. Many women empowerment stories show how resilience and courage can transform even the most difficult beginnings into powerful life journeys.

And that job became the only thread holding my life together.

Standing Alone but Refusing to Fall in My Orphan to Independent Mother Journey

Despite the emotional pain, I continued going to work every day at the hospital.

From the outside, people saw a nurse performing her duties normally. I wore my uniform, attended to patients, and followed my responsibilities just like everyone else.

But inside, I was carrying a deep emptiness.

Losing my mother meant losing the last emotional anchor in my life.

Yet life has a strange way of teaching resilience.

When there is no one left to depend on, we discover strength within ourselves that we never knew existed.

I realized that if I wanted a future, I had to keep moving forward.

There was no other option.

The Beginning of a Long Journey

That moment marked the beginning of a long and difficult journey.

A journey that would later include marriage, hardship, motherhood, struggle, and eventually the courage to rebuild life independently.

At that time, however, I did not know what challenges lay ahead.

All I knew was that I had to stand on my own feet.

The little girl who once entered an orphanage had now become a working woman trying to survive in the world alone.

Life had already tested me many times.

But the most difficult chapters were still waiting.

A Message to Every Woman Reading This

If there is one lesson my early life taught me, it is this:

Your beginnings do not define your destiny.

Being born into difficult circumstances does not mean you are destined to remain there forever.

Strength often grows in the most unexpected places.

Sometimes, the people who appear to have the least support develop the greatest resilience.

And even when life feels uncertain, every small step forward matters.

Because each step brings you closer to a future you are still building.
